May 2: World Tuna Day: -- Observed throughout the coastal zone of the planet, this date was an achievement of fishing communities, scientists, and environmentalists who came together to protect tuna schools around the world and help create a sustainable fishing model. Why is there a World Tuna Day? Well, because tuna is one of the most vigorous and important fish in the seas. It is certainly among the most fascinating when it comes to size, strength, agility, and speed. In addition, it is one of the most important animals for the human economy and nutrition. Tuna species represent 20% of the value of all marine fisheries and more than 8% of all seafood traded globally. Tunas are magnificent wild animals and have been known to mankind for thousands of years. One of the oldest records of the species was made by Aristotle in his work on the classification of animals. These fish can reach up to eight feet in length and weigh over 500 pounds, but don't think we're talking about a slow animal. This fish's powerful body allows it to reach a speed of up to 43 miles per hour! Size, strength, and speed are important characteristics of tuna as they are constantly migrating, crossing oceans, and going from one continent to another. That's why they are in almost every ocean in the world. Tuna can live in several seas on the planet as it is an endothermic fish. It can increase its body temperature when facing the icy waters on its migration routes. This evolutionary adaptation is what gives tuna meat its characteristic reddish-pink color and powerful nutritional properties. A large, tasty, and nutritious fish that can be found almost all over the world, it is no accident that tuna has become so important in the diet of millions of people. It is one of the major animals exploited by the fishing industry. Currently, at least 96 countries exploit schools of tuna in the oceans. Throughout history, however, tuna fishing was limited for technical reasons. It was with the advent of engines that fishing boats managed to increase the area of ??fishing nets they cast over the seas. This has led to an exponential growth in the capture of these fish. With the growth of the world population, tuna fishing has become more intense, increasing the risk of predatory overexploitation of these animals. Overfishing not only threatens tuna but also other marine animals. The indiscriminate use of fishing nets also kills turtles, dolphins, and swordfish. In 2016, the United Nations General Assembly established May 2 as World Tuna Day. The aim was to raise awareness of a sustainable tuna fishing model. May 2: National Brothers And Sisters Day: -- Dedicated to the people who (we hope) made your childhood memorable - your siblings. They've been there for you during the good times. And they haven't left your side through the bad (even if they created it by getting you in trouble). Of course, there were probably times where you couldn't stand the sight of each other. What siblings don't get into fights? Still, today is the day to reflect on the best times. We all agree about the importance of Mother's Day and Father's Day. But brothers and sisters know you like no one else ever will. Life is short, and it's easy to get caught up on the little things that may come your way. National Brothers and Sisters Day was created after an unknown woman lost her brother and realized how she never let him know how much he meant to her. Two years after his death, she decided to create a holiday that was all about siblings connecting, reconnecting, and appreciating each other so that others didn't miss out on what she did: a close relationship with her brother. And thus, National Brothers and Sisters Day was born. It is meant to be a holiday that is strictly celebrated from the heart where brothers and sisters really take the time to value and cherish each other and the memories they share and to (of course) create new ones. Not to be confused with National Siblings Day, this holiday was created to specifically recognize the bond that only brothers and sisters can have. So whether you and your brother or sister haven't spoken in days, months or years, it's a time to reflect and strengthen bonds. Call your sibling and talk for 10 minutes or go see a movie together. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate this holiday, all you have to do appreciate and continue to grow with your brother or sister. Brothers and sisters for a lot of people are each other's first best friends, first sparring partners, and one of their most valued protectors. Each year the holiday is celebrated at the beginning of May - the middle of spring, a time for blooming. It's the perfect time of the year to water and nurture your relationship no matter how weak or strong it may be. May 2: Baby Day: -- They are adorable, soft and full of curiosity! A baby's smile can light up a room, melt a heart, and give a whole new meaning to life. Babies are amazing; they instill a sense of hope and joy in you, inspiring you to improve yourself as a person. Everyone has babies around them: yours, a family member's, a friend's, or even a neighbor's, and this is a day to learn how to care better for them. After all, they need all the love, care, and attention they can get. Baby Day was developed to highlight the wonders and delights that babies experience as they grow up. The road to adulthood isn't always smooth, and that's why these little ones have their parents by their side to help them out. As much as children can help us learn more about ourselves and the world, we can also learn from them. Children come in all shapes and sizes and represent a fresh start and a wonderful innocence. Even if they are born ignorant, they are also born without preconceptions, cynicisms, and prejudices. It would be wonderful if we could all be so carefree. Becoming a parent, whether you have one child or several, is not for the faint of heart. Expect to have your assumptions about the world and your place in it tested daily by the never-ending barrage of "why's" that will come your way. Those who become parents often develop a sense of selflessness, as their entire world revolves around their small ones. To further the education of the next generation, Baby Day was created. Your older children may one day be forced to babysit for younger siblings, and it's important to teach them how to do so. A great opportunity to teach older children about the challenges of caring for a helpless, frail newborn is presented on this occasion. To help them better grasp a baby's requirements, teach them how to interpret the baby's body language and listen to verbal cries. May 2: National Life Insurance Day: -- Marks the anniversary of the first day that life insurance became available in the United States. This day celebrates life insurance and reminds us of the benefits of having it. It is important to have life insurance as it can ensure we don't fall into debt, pre-fund a child's college education, provide surviving family members with the chance to move on with a clean slate, and keep a business afloat for a while in the event of the death of a family member who owned a business. Life insurance makes it possible to establish an emergency fund and seek out high-quality investment opportunities to build wealth while making sure your family is taken care of. Life insurance is a security for the future. The earliest-known life insurance policy was taken out at Royal Exchange, London, on June 18, 1583. A Richard Martin insured a William Gybbons, paying 13 merchants 30 pounds for 400 pounds if the insured died within a year. In modern times, the first company to offer insurance was the Amicable Society for a Perpetual Assurance Office, which was founded in London in 1706 by William Talbot and Sir Thomas Allen. Each member made an annual payment per share on one to three sales with consideration to the age of the members being 12 to 55. At the end of the year, a portion of the 'amicable contribution' was divided among the wives and children of deceased members, in proportion to the number of shares the heirs owned. During the late 1760s, the sale of life insurance in the United States began. On May 2, 1759, the charter was recorded for the Corporation For Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers, which was America's first life insurance company and was created by the Presbyterian Synods in Philadelphia and New York City. Known as the Presbyterian Ministers Fund for Life Insurance, Presbyterians formed this non-profit mutual fund for their ministers. Between 1787 and 1837, over two dozen life insurance companies were started, but fewer than half a dozen survived. May 2 was designated each year for the celebration of National Life Insurance Day. In 2014, Liran Hirschkorn, who was an Independent Insurance Agent at Best Life Quote, submitted National Life Insurance Day to commemorate the anniversary of life insurance becoming available in the United States. May 2: Polish National Flag Day: -- Poles living at home and abroad welcome the month of May with great joy, as they celebrate May 1 as International Workers' Day, May 3 as Constitution Day, and May 2 as Polish National Flag Day. Although May 2 is not a public holiday, it is treated as such by the Poles. After withstanding centuries of internal and external storms, Poland has emerged as one of the most important countries in the European Union. The auspicious day of May 2 celebrates the republic's past struggles and strengthens the Poles for the challenges they face today. May is a month for celebration for the people of Poland, with three consecutive holidays from May 1 to May 3. Sandwiched between the two public holidays is Polish National Flag Day. May 2 is a special day in the history of Poland. It is on May 2, 1945, that the First Polish Army conquered the capital of Nazi Germany and placed the colors of Poland on the Berlin Victory Column. The day is also observed to immortalize the resistance against the communist regime of Poland that abolished the unfurling of the Polish flag after May 1 - effectively erasing the proof of Poland's sovereignty on its Constitution Day. The Poles celebrate May 2 with patriotic rigor. Various demonstrations across the country are organized and people wave a white and red flag across town. Since the 2010s, the day has largely transformed into a fashionable holiday, with the highest government official to the lowest posted clerk of the entire country wearing the national cockade. National Polish Flag Day was declared on February 20, 2004, after years of legislation and bureaucratic dealings that included the replacement of the Polish National Flag with the Day of the White Eagle. Poland's national flag features red and white colors, which are inspired by the Polish coat of arms. The red symbolizes fire and blood, whereas the white epitomizes purity and nobility. May 2, 1536: The English Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of England): Anne Boleyn, Queen Of England: - The Arrest And Imprisonment Of Anne Boleyn, Queen Of England: -- Anne Boleyn, Queen Of England, is arrested and imprisoned on charges of adultery, incest, treason and witchcraft. Anne Boleyn (1501 - 19 May 1536) was Queen Of England from 1533 to 1536 as the second wife of King Henry VIII. Henry's marriage to her, and her subsequent execution by beheading, made her a key figure in the political and religious upheaval that was the start of the English Reformation. Anne was the daughter of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Howard, and was educated in the Netherlands and France, largely as a maid of honour to Queen Claude of France. Anne returned to England in early 1522, to marry her Irish cousin James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond; the marriage plans were broken off, and instead she secured a post at court as maid of honour to Henry VIII's wife, Catherine Of Aragon. Early in 1523 Anne was secretly betrothed to Henry Percy, son of the 5th Earl of Northumberland, but the betrothal was broken off when Percy's father refused to support their engagement. Cardinal Wolsey refused the match in January 1524 and Anne was sent back home to Hever Castle. In February or March 1526, Henry VIII began his pursuit of Anne. She resisted his attempts to seduce her, refusing to become his mistress, which her sister Mary had been. It soon became the one absorbing object of Henry's desires to annul his marriage to Catherine Of Aragon so he would be free to marry Anne. When it became clear that Pope Clement VII would not annul the marriage, the breaking of the Catholic Church's power in England began. In 1532, Henry granted Anne the Marquessate of Pembroke. Henry and Anne formally married on 25 January 1533, after a secret wedding on 14 November 1532. On 23 May 1533, newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer declared Henry and Catherine's marriage null and void; five days later, he declared Henry and Anne's marriage valid. Shortly afterwards, the Pope decreed sentences of excommunication against Henry and Cranmer. As a result of this marriage and these excommunications, the first break between the Church of England and Rome took place and the Church of England was brought under the King's control. Anne was crowned Queen Of England on 1 June 1533. On 7 September, she gave birth to the future Queen Elizabeth I. Henry was disappointed to have a daughter rather than a son but hoped a son would follow and professed to love Elizabeth. Anne subsequently had three miscarriages, and by March 1536, Henry was courting Jane Seymour. In order to marry Jane Seymour, Henry had to find reasons to end the marriage to Anne. Henry VIII had Anne investigated for high treason in April 1536. On 2 May she was arrested and sent to the Tower of London, where she was tried before a jury of peers - which included Henry Percy, her former betrothed, and her own uncle, Thomas Howard - and found guilty on 15 May. She was beheaded four days later. Modern historians view the charges against her, which included adultery, incest and plotting to kill the king, as unconvincing. Some say that Anne was accused of witchcraft but the indictments make no mention of this charge. After the coronation of her daughter, Elizabeth, Anne was venerated as a martyr and heroine of the English Reformation, particularly through the works of John Foxe. Over the centuries, she has inspired, or been mentioned, in many artistic and cultural works and thereby retained her hold on the popular imagination. She has been called "the most influential and important queen consort England has ever had", as she provided the occasion for Henry VIII to annul his marriage to Catherine Of Aragon and declare the English church's independence from Rome. May 2, 1568: The Scottish Monarchy (The Monarchy Of The Kingdom Of Scotland): Mary, Queen Of Scots: Mary, Queen Of Scots' Imprisonment In Scotland: Mary, Queen Of Scots' Escape From Loch Leven Castle: -- Mary, Queen Of Scots, escapes from Loch Leven Castle with the help of her gaoler's ("jailer's) family; in 1588, the Queen's gaoler, James Douglas, inherited the title Earl of Morton, and moved away from the castle. Loch Leven Castle is a ruined castle on an island in Loch Leven, in the Perth and Kinross local authority area of Scotland. Possibly built around 1300, the castle was the location of military action during the Wars of Scottish Independence (1296-1357). In the latter part of the 14th century, the castle was granted by his uncle to William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, and remained in the Douglases' hands for the next 300 years. It was bought, in 1675, by Sir William Bruce, who used the castle as a focal point in his garden; it was never again used as a residence. Mary, Queen Of Scots was imprisoned here in 1567-68, and forced to abdicate as queen. Today, the remains of the castle are protected as a scheduled monument in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.[1] Loch Leven Castle is accessible in summer by the public via a ferry. Ultimately Mary Stuart, Queen Of Scots, was beheaded at Fotheringhay, England on February 8, 1587, after 19 years as a prisoner of Queen Elizabeth I. She became entangled in the complex political events surrounding the Protestant Reformation in England and was charged with complicity in a plot to assassinate Elizabeth. Mary, Queen Of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I, reigned over Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567. The only surviving legitimate child of James V of Scotland, she was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. He ascended the French throne as King Francis II in 1559, and Mary briefly became queen consort of France, until his death in December 1560. Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland, arriving in Leith on 19 August 1561. Four years later, she married her first cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, but their union was unhappy. In February 1567, his residence was destroyed by an explosion, and Darnley was found murdered in the garden. James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, was generally believed to have orchestrated Darnley's death, but he was acquitted of the charge in April 1567, and the following month he married Mary. Following an uprising against the couple, Mary was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle on an island in Loch Leven in the Perth and Kinross local authority area of Scotland.. On July 24,1567, she was forced to abdicate in favour of James VI, her one-year-old son by Darnley. After an unsuccessful attempt to regain the throne, she fled southwards seeking the protection of her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth I Of England. Mary had previously claimed Elizabeth's throne as her own and was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many English Catholics, including participants in a rebellion known as the Rising of the North. Perceiving her as a threat, Elizabeth had her confined in various castles and manor houses in the interior of England. After eighteen and a half years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth in 1586. She was beheaded the following year. #MaryStuart #MaryQueenOfScots #MaryI #LochLevenCastle #LochLeven #JamesDouglas #EnglishMonarchy #ScottishMonarhy #HouseOfStuart #BritishMonarchy #BritishNobility #BritishHistory #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/mary-queen-of-scots-vanessa-redgrave-glenda-jackson-mp4-download-dvd.html

May 2, 1729: #BOTD: Catherine II, most commonly known as Catherine The Great (Yekaterina Velikaya), the last reigning Empress of Russia and the country's longest-ruling female leader (d. November 17, 1796) is #born Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste of Anhalt-Zerbst to the House Of Ascania dynasty in Stettin, Province of Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia, Holy Roman Empire. Her full Russian name as Yekaterina Alekseyevna Romanova. She converted from Lutheran to Eastern Orthodox on June 28 ,1744, and was received into the church as Yekaterina Alekseyevna (Catherine, daughter of Aleksey). She married the Emperor of Russia Peter III and thereby into the House Of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov dynasty in 1745 at the age of sixteen, and came to power following a coup d'etat when her husband was assassinated. Under her reign, Russia was revitalised; it grew larger and stronger, and was recognised as one of the great powers of Europe. In both her accession to power and in rule of her empire, Catherine often relied on her noble favourites, most notably Grigory Orlov and Grigory Potemkin. Assisted by highly successful generals such as Alexander Suvorov and Pyotr Rumyantsev, and admirals such as Fyodor Ushakov, she governed at a time when the Russian Empire was expanding rapidly by conquest and diplomacy. In the south, the Crimean Khanate was crushed following victories over the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish wars, and Russia colonised the territories of Novorossiya along the coasts of the Black and Azov Seas. In the west, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, ruled by Catherine's former lover, king Stanislaw August Poniatowski, was eventually partitioned, with the Russian Empire gaining the largest share. In the east, Russia started to colonise Alaska, establishing Russian America. Catherine reformed the administration of Russian guberniyas, and many new cities and towns were founded on her orders. An admirer of Peter The Great, Catherine continued to modernise Russia along Western European lines. However, military conscription and the economy continued to depend on serfdom, and the increasing demands of the state and private landowners led to increased levels of reliance on serfs. This was one of the chief reasons behind several rebellions, including the large-scale Pugachev's Rebellion of cossacks and peasants. The period of Catherine the Great's rule, the Catherinian Era, is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire and the Russian nobility. The Manifesto on Freedom of the Nobility, issued during the short reign of Peter III and confirmed by Catherine, freed Russian nobles from compulsory military or state service. Construction of many mansions of the nobility, in the classical style endorsed by the Empress, changed the face of the country. She enthusiastically supported the ideals of The Enlightenment, thus earning the status of an enlightened despot. As a patron of the arts she presided over the age of the Russian Enlightenment, a period when the Smolny Institute, the first state-financed higher education institution for women in Europe, was established. Catherine The Great died of a stroke at the Winter Palace, Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire, aged 67. She is buried at Saints Peter And Paul Cathedral, Saint Petersburg, Russia. May 2, 1892: #BOTD: Manfred von Richthofen, famous as "The Red Baron", German captain and fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I, considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories (d. April 21, 1918) is #born Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen in Kleinburg, near Breslau, Lower Silesia (now part of the city of Wroclaw, Poland). Originally a cavalryman, Richthofen transferred to the Air Service in 1915, becoming one of the first members of fighter squadron Jagdstaffel 2 in 1916. He quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot, and during 1917 became leader of Jasta 11 and then the larger fighter wing unit Jagdgeschwader 1, better known as "The Flying Circus" or "Richthofen's Circus" because of the bright colours of its aircraft, and perhaps also because of the way the unit was transferred from one area of allied air activity to another - moving like a travelling circus, and frequently setting up in tents on improvised airfields. By 1918, Richthofen was regarded as a national hero in Germany, and respected by his enemies. He remains one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films and other media. On April 21, 1918: he was shot down and killed just after 11:00 AM over Vaux-sur-Somme while flying over Morlancourt Ridge near the Somme River. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. Having crashed in Allied territory, Officers of No. 3 Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) were pallbearers at his funeral, and other ranks from the squadron acted as a guard of honour during the Red Baron's funeral on April 22, 1918. In the early 1920s the French authorities created a military cemetery at Fricourt, in which a large number of German war dead, including Richthofen, were reinterred. In 1925 von Richthofen's youngest brother, Bolko, recovered the body from Fricourt and took it to Germany. During the Cold War, the Invalidenfriedhof was on the boundary of the Soviet zone in Berlin, and the tombstone became damaged by bullets fired at attempted escapees from East Germany. In 1975 the body was moved to a Richthofen family grave plot at the Sudfriedhof in Wiesbaden. Spock's book "The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care" (1946) is one of the best-sellers of all time. The book's premise to mothers is that "you know more than you think you do." Spock was the first pediatrician to study psychoanalysis to try to understand children's needs and family dynamics. His ideas about childcare influenced several generations of parents to be more flexible and affectionate with their children, and to treat them as individuals. However, they were also widely criticized by colleagues for relying too heavily on anecdotal evidence rather than serious academic research. Spock was an activist in the New Left and anti Vietnam War movements during the 1960s and early 1970s. At the time, his books were criticized for propagating permissiveness and an expectation of instant gratification which allegedly led young people to join these movements-a charge that Spock denied. Spock also won an Olympic gold medal in rowing in 1924 while attending Yale University. May 2, 1908: #BOTD: #HBD! Frank Rowlett, American cryptologist whose solution of a major Japanese cipher machine saved hundreds of American lives during World War II (d. June 29, 1998) is #born Frank Byron Rowlett in Rose Hill, Lee County, Virginia. Frank B. Rowlett supervised the half-dozen Army code-breakers who, after 18 months of effort, cracked the chief Japanese diplomatic cipher machine, known as the Type B Cipher Machine and codenamed PURPLE by U.S. officials, in September 1940. Although the solution gave no warning of the Pearl Harbor attack -- because no messages alerting anybody to the attack were ever sent -- it paradoxically helped U.S. forces in the European theater. The PURPLE machine encrypted the dispatches to Tokyo of the Japanese ambassador in Berlin. One of those messages detailed German defenses against the expected Allied invasion and was sent after the ambassador's November 1943 tour of the Atlantic Wall, a line of fortifications. A U.S. radio post in Ethiopia intercepted it; U.S. code-breakers read it. It revealed that tank ditches were "built in a triangular cross-section with a span across the top of 5 meters and a depth of 3.5 meters." Turrets were "built in a continuous line, close to the shore," each equipped with two or three machine guns, as well as grenade launchers. Mr. Rowlett said he believed that the information from that message alone saved thousands of U.S. lives. May 2, 1918: The History Of The Automobile: The History Of The Automotive Industry: Mergers And Acquisitions (M & A): The General Motors Company (GM) Acquisition Of The Chevrolet Motor Company: -- General Motors acquires the Chevrolet Motor Company of Delaware. Chevrolet, colloquially referred to as Chevy and formally the Chevrolet Division of General Motors Company, is an American automobile division of the American manufacturer General Motors (GM). Louis Chevrolet and ousted General Motors founder William C. Durant started the company on November 3, 1911 as the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. Durant used the Chevrolet Motor Car Company to acquire a controlling stake in General Motors with a reverse merger occurring on May 2, 1918 and propelled himself back to the GM presidency. After Durant's second ousting in 1919, Alfred Sloan, with his maxim "a car for every purse and purpose", would pick the Chevrolet brand to become the volume leader in the General Motors family, selling mainstream vehicles to compete with Henry Ford's Model T in 1919 and overtaking Ford as the best-selling car in the United States by 1929. May 2, 1920: The History Of Sports: The History Of Sports In The United States: The History Of Baseball: The History Of Baseball In The United States: The History Of Negro League Baseball: -- The first game of the Negro National League baseball is played in Indianapolis, Indiana. The first Negro National League (NNL) was one of the several Negro leagues that were established during the period in the United States when organized baseball was segregated. The league was formed in 1920 with former player Rube Foster as its president. Led by Rube Foster, owner and manager of the Chicago American Giants, the NNL was established on February 13, 1920, by a coalition of team owners at a meeting in a Kansas City YMCA. The new league was the first African American baseball circuit to achieve stability and last more than one season. At first the league operated mainly in midwestern cities, ranging from Kansas City in the west to Pittsburgh in the east; in 1924 it expanded into the south, adding franchises in Birmingham, Alabama, and Memphis, Tennessee. The two most important east coast clubs, the Hilldale Club of Darby, Pennsylvania, and the Bacharach Giants of Atlantic City, were affiliated with the NNL as associate clubs from 1920 to 1922, but did not compete for the championship. In 1923 they and four other eastern teams formed the Eastern Colored League (ECL) and raided the NNL for many of its top players, including John Henry Lloyd, Biz Mackey, George Scales, George Carr, and Clint Thomas, and signing Oscar Charleston, and Reuben Currie in 1924. The war between the two leagues came to an end in 1924, when they agreed to respect each other's contracts and arranged for the Colored World Series between their champions. The NNL survived controversies over umpiring, scheduling, and what some perceived as league president Rube Foster's disproportionate influence and favoritism toward his own team. It also outlasted Foster's decline into mental illness in 1926, and its eastern rival, the ECL, which folded in early 1928. The NNL finally fell apart in 1931 under the economic stress of the Great Depression. The Negro American League, founded in 1937 and including several of the same teams that played in the original Negro National League, would eventually carry on as the western circuit of black baseball. A second Negro National League was organized in 1933, but eventually became concentrated on the east coast. To distinguish between the two unrelated leagues, they are usually referred to as the first Negro National League (NNL I) and the second Negro National League (NNL II). From 1920 through 1924, the team in first place at the end of the season was declared the Pennant winner. Due to the unorthodox nature of the schedule (and little incentive to enforce it), some teams frequently played many more games than others did in any given season. This led to some disputed championships and two teams claiming the title. The 1931 season did not finish all games, which meant that while St. Louis was awarded the title, non-member Pittsburgh Crawfords disputed their status as champion. From 1924 to 1927, the pennant champion went to play in the Negro World Series. Generally, the team with the best winning percentage (with some minimum number of games played) was awarded the Pennant, but other times it was the team with the most victories. The "games behind" method of recording standings was uncommon in most black leagues. From 1925 through 1931, the NNL split the season into two halves. The winner of the first half played the winner of the second half for the league Pennant. As mentioned above, disputes also occurred in the split season finishes. 1929 and 1931 saw Kansas City win both halves. For the duration of the league, a Colored World Series took place four times, from 1924 through 1927. The NNL Pennant winner met the champion of the rival Eastern Colored League. Three out of the four years, the Negro National League team won. May 2, 1929: #BOTD: #HBD! Link Wray, Native American Shawnee pioneer rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist who became popular in the late 1950s, whose 1958 instrumental hit "Rumble" by Link Wray And His Ray Men popularized the power chord, which became the foundation of modern rock guitar music from rock to punk (d. November 5, 2005) is #born Fred Lincoln Wray, Jr. in Dunn, North Carolina, to Fred Lincoln Wray Sr. and Lillian Mae (nee Coats), whom her son identified as being Shawnee. He recalled living in very harsh conditions during childhood, in mud huts, without electricity or heating, going to school barefoot, barely clothed. He recounted that his family experienced discrimination, including times when they had to hide from the Ku Klux Klan. Wray later said: "The cops, the sheriff, the drugstore owner - they were all Ku Klux Klan. They put the masks on and, if you did something wrong, they'd tie you to a tree and whip you or kill you." His family listed themselves as White on census records. Three songs Wray performed during his career were named for Indigenous peoples: "Shawnee", "Apache", and "Comanche". Though he began in country music, his musical style went on to consist primarily of rock and roll, rockabilly, and instrumental rock. Link Wray built on the distorted electric guitar sound of early rock and roll records records and mixed it with the songs and rhythms of black rhythm and blues. He is cited as an influence by Iggy Pop and Neil Young. Jimmy Page says that Link Wray had a "real rebel attitude" and credits him in It Might Get Loud as a major influence in his early career. According to Rolling Stone, Pete Townshend of The Who once said, "If it hadn't been for Link Wray and 'Rumble,' I never would have picked up a guitar." Wray's first three marriages, to Elizabeth Canady Wray, Ethel Tidwell Wray, and Sharon Cole Wray, produced eight children. In the early 1980s, Wray relocated to Denmark and married Olive Povlsen, who became his manager. Wray died of heart failure at his home in Copenhagen, on November 5, 2005, at the age of 76. He was survived by his nine children, 24 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Wray was cremated, and his ashes were buried in the crypt of the Christian's Church, Copenhagen. Rolling Stone placed Wray at No. 45 of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. In 2013 and 2017 he was a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, prior to being inducted in the Musical Influence category in 2023. In the official Soviet version, the battle was similar to that of the battle for the Reichstag. There was an assault over Wilhelmplatz and into the building with a howitzer to blast open the front doors and several battles within the building. Major Anna Nikulina, a political officer with Lieutenant-General I. P. Rossly's 9th Rifle Corps of the 5th Shock Army carried and unfurled the red flag on the roof. Beevor claims that the official Soviet description is an exaggeration, as most of the German combat troops had left in the breakouts the night before, and resistance must have been far less than that inside the Reichstag. At 01:00 hours, the Soviets picked up radio message from the German LVI Corps requesting a cease-fire and stating that emissaries would come under a white flag to Potsdamer bridge. General Weidling surrendered with his staff at 06:00 hours. He was taken to see Lieutenant-General Chuikov at 8:23 am. Chuikov, who had commanded the successful defence of Stalingrad, asked: "You are the commander of the Berlin garrison?" Weidling replied: "Yes, I am the commander of the LVI Panzer Corps." Chuikov then asked: "Where is Krebs? What did he say?" Weidling replied: "I saw him yesterday in the Reich Chancellery." Weidling then added: "I thought he would commit suicide." In the discussions that followed, Weidling agreed to an unconditional surrender of the city of Berlin. He agreed to order the city's defenders to surrender to the Soviets. Under the direction of Chuikov and Soviet General Vasily Sokolovsky (Chief of staff of the 1st Ukrainian Front), Weidling put his order to surrender in writing. The 350-strong garrison of the Zoo flak tower finally left the building. There was sporadic fighting in a few isolated buildings where some SS still refused to surrender. The Soviets simply blasted any such building to rubble. Most Germans, soldiers and civilians, were grateful to receive food issued at Red Army soup kitchens. The Soviets went house to house and rounded up anyone in a uniform including firemen and railwaymen, which led to them later exaggerating the total number of German troops in the city. The Soviet flag is raised over the Reich Chancellery, by order of Stalin. The Soviet Banner of Victory is the banner raised by the Red Army soldiers on the Reichstag building in Berlin, on May 1, 1945, the day after Adolf Hitler committed suicide. It was raised by three Soviet soldiers: Alexei Berest, Mikhail Yegorov, and Meliton Kantaria, from USSR. The Victory Banner, made under battlefield conditions, is the official symbol of the Victory of the Soviet people against Nazi Germany during the Second World War. It is also one of the national treasures of Russia. The Cyrillic inscription reads "150th Rifle, Order of Kutuzov 2nd class, Idritsa Division, 79th Rifle Corps, 3rd Shock Army, 1st Byelorussian Front". Although this flag was not the only one to be hoisted on the Reichstag, it was the first and only survivor of all the "official" flags specially prepared to be raised there. May 2, 1945: History Of The Jews In Germany: The European Civil War: World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of World War II): The Holocaust (Shoah): The Holocaust In Germany: Dachau Concentration Camp: -- A death march from Dachau to the Austrian border is halted by the segregated, all-Nisei 522nd Field Artillery Battalion of the U.S. Army in southern Bavaria, saving several hundred prisoners. Dachau concentration camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany, intended to hold political prisoners. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory northeast of the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany. Its purpose was enlarged to include forced labor, and eventually, the imprisonment of Jews, German and Austrian criminals, and eventually foreign nationals from countries that Germany occupied or invaded. The Dachau camp system grew to include nearly 100 sub-camps, which were mostly work camps or Arbeitskommandos, and were located throughout southern Germany and Austria. The camps were liberated by U.S. forces on 29 April 1945. Prisoners lived in constant fear of brutal treatment and terror detention including standing cells, floggings, the so-called tree or pole hanging, and standing at attention for extremely long periods. There were 32,000 documented deaths at the camp, and thousands that are undocumented. Approximately 10,000 of the 30,000 prisoners were sick at the time of liberation. In the postwar years the Dachau facility served to hold SS soldiers awaiting trial. After 1948, it held ethnic Germans who had been expelled from eastern Europe and were awaiting resettlement, and also was used for a time as a United States military base during the occupation. It was finally closed in 1960. There are several religious memorials within the Memorial Site, which is open to the public. February 16, 2015) is #born Lesley Sue Goldstein in Brooklyn, New York City, into a middle-class Jewish family. In 1963, at the age of 16, she recorded the pop hit "It's My Party". It became a number one, nationwide hit, and it was the first hit single for producer Quincy Jones. They followed it up with other hits including "Judy's Turn to Cry", "She's a Fool", "You Don't Own Me", "Maybe I Know" and "California Nights". Gore also worked as an actress and composed songs with her brother, Michael Gore, for the 1980 film Fame, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. She hosted an LGBT-oriented public television show, In the Life, on American TV in the 2000s, and was active until 2014. Gore had been working on a memoir and a Broadway show based on her life when she died of lung cancer on February 16, 2015, at the NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, New York City, at the age of 68. She was cremated, and her ashes were scattered at an undetermined location. At the time of her death, Gore and her partner Lois Sasson had been together for 33 years. They planned to be married in the summer of 2015. Her New York Times obituary stated, "with songs like 'It's My Party,' 'Judy's Turn to Cry', and the indelibly defiant 1964 single 'You Don't Own Me' - all recorded before she was 18 - Gore made herself the voice of teenaged girls aggrieved by fickle boyfriends, moving quickly from tearful self-pity to fierce self-assertion." May 2, 1952: Aviation: The History Of Aviation: The History Of Civil Aviation: Maiden Flights: -- The De Havilland Comet 1, the first ever jet airliner, makes its maiden commercial service flight with BOAC, from London to Johannesburg. Developed and manufactured by de Havilland at its Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, it featured an aerodynamically clean design with four de Havilland Ghost turbojet engines buried in the wing roots, a pressurised cabin, and large square windows. For the era, it offered a relatively quiet, comfortable passenger cabin and was commercially promising at its debut in 1952. However, within a year of entering airline service problems started to emerge, with three Comets lost within twelve months in highly publicised accidents, after suffering catastrophic in-flight break-ups. Two of these were found to be caused by structural failure resulting from metal fatigue in the airframe, a phenomenon not fully understood at the time. The other one was due to overstressing of the airframe during flight through severe weather. The Comet was withdrawn from service and extensively tested. Design and construction flaws, including improper riveting and dangerous concentrations of stress around some square openings in the fuselage, were ultimately identified. As a result, the Comet was extensively redesigned, with oval windows, structural reinforcements and other changes. Rival manufacturers meanwhile heeded the lessons learned from the Comet while developing their own aircraft. May 2, 1955: Literature: The History Of Literature: Journalism: The History Of Drama: American Literary Awards: American Drama Awards: The Pulitzer Prize: The Pulitzer Prize For Drama: -- Tennessee Williams wins The Pulitzer Prize For Drama for Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. Thomas Lanier Williams III, known by his pen name Tennessee Williams (March 26, 1911 - February 25, 1983) was, along with his contemporaries Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller, considered among the three foremost playwrights of 20th-century American drama. After years of obscurity, at age 33 he became suddenly famous with the success of The Glass Menagerie (1944) in New York City. This play closely reflected his own unhappy family background. It was the first of a string of successes, including A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955) (both of which won the Pulitzer Prize), Sweet Bird of Youth (1959), and The Night of the Iguana (1961). With his later work, he attempted a new style that did not appeal to audiences. His drama A Streetcar Named Desire is often numbered on short lists of the finest American plays of the 20th century alongside Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night and Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Much of Williams' most acclaimed work has been adapted for the cinema. He also wrote short stories, poetry, essays and a volume of memoirs. In 1979, four years before his death, Williams was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. May 2, 2011: The War On Terror (The Global War On Terrorism [GWOT]): The Killing Of Osama Bin Laden: (The Death Of Osama Bin Laden, Operation Neptune Spear): -- #DOTD: Osama bin Laden, the founder and first leader of the Islamist terrorist group Al-Qaeda, the suspected mastermind behind the September 11 attacks and the FBI's most wanted man, is killed by United States Navy SEALs of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (also known as DEVGRU or SEAL Team Six) in Abbottabad, Pakistan, shortly after 1:00 am PKT (20:00 UTC, May 1). It was a CIA-led operation with Joint Special Operations Command, commonly known as JSOC, coordinating the Special Mission Units involved in the raid. In addition to SEAL Team Six, participating units under JSOC included the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) - also known as "Night Stalkers" - and operators from the CIA's Special Activities Division, which recruits heavily from former JSOC Special Mission Units. The operation ended a nearly 10-year search for bin Laden, following his role in the September 11 attacks on the United States. The raid on bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan was launched from Afghanistan. U.S. military officials said that after the raid U.S. forces took the body of bin Laden to Afghanistan for identification, then buried it at sea within 24 hours of his death in accordance with Islamic tradition. Al-Qaeda confirmed the death on May 6 with posts made on militant websites, vowing to avenge the killing. Other Pakistani militant groups, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, vowed retaliation against the U.S. and against Pakistan for not preventing the operation. The raid was supported by over 90% of the American public, was welcomed by the United Nations, NATO, the European Union and a large number of governments, but was condemned by others, including two-thirds of the Pakistani public. Legal and ethical aspects of the killing, such as his not being taken alive despite being unarmed, were questioned by others, including Amnesty International. Also controversial was the decision not to release any photographic or DNA evidence of bin Laden's death to the public. In the aftermath of the killing, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani formed a commission under Senior Justice Javed Iqbal to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. The resulting Abbottabad Commission Report, which revealed Pakistani state military and intelligence authorities' "collective failure" that enabled bin Laden to hide in Pakistan for nine years, was leaked to Al Jazeera on July 8, 2013. May 2: National Sandra Day: A day that celebrates all those who bear the name. Sandra is a Greek female name meaning 'protector of man.' It is the short form of Alexandra or Cassandra, which can be spelled as Kassandra. In the Greek mythologies, Cassandra is the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. Apollo blessed her with the gift of prophecy but later cursed her for enjoying his gift but not falling in love with him. Did you know that over 7,000 girls born in the United States in 1990 were named Cassandra? Unfortunately, in 2021, only about 493 girls are called Cassandra. National Sandra Day is observed on May 2 annually to speak about the origin of the name, its surrounding myths, and variations and to appreciate all the Sandras on earth. Sandra originates from Greek. According to Greek mythology, Sandra is derived from Alexandros, wife of Zeus, who was notable for resisting the powers of Zeus. Her sister, Hera - the Goddess and Queen of Olympus, was a beautiful, complex, and fascinating entity to the Greeks. She served as the defender of heroes and warriors and the Goddess of Women and Children. Sandra is famous with Italians, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Germans, and others. Its variations are dependent on the language and culture of those who bear it. The Italian variant is Alessa while the American is Saundra. Aliaksandra is for the Belarusians, Szandra for the Hungarians, Sashenka for Russians, and Oleksandra for Ukrainians. The marriage between King Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark in 1863 and the 1864 novel "Emilia in England," published by George Meredith, made the name popular in England. May 2: National Byron Day: -- A day that honors of all those lucky people bearing the name Byron. Some, known as toponymic names, refer to the place from which they derive. Byron, for example, originates from Byram, a town in North Yorkshire, England. The name is associated with prominent Englishmen, ranging from military officers to explorers, actors, and artists. It also cuts outside Europe, and many Americans bear it. An interesting thing about the name is that some people like it, as much as they hate it, all because of one person they dislike. The inaugural celebration of National Byron Day is to happen in 2023. Despite its recent beginning, the day will doubtless be highly anticipated as many around the globe relate to the name. It will also be informative and fun to learn about their namesakes and how common, popular, and maybe, even hated their name is. The name Byron has been adopted by notable English nobles and countrymen alike. According to a one-time survey of over 100 people, it is considered classic, natural, nerdy, mature, and, of course, upper class. In 2011, it was the 407th most popular name in the U.K. In the U.S., it was the 287th most popular in 1991, but by 2021, it had dropped to 751th. The famous romantic poet, George Gordon Byron, known simply as Lord Byron, was well-known as the sixth Baron Byron not only in England but also outside his country. In 2008, the Greek government created Byron Day to be celebrated every April 19 in his honor. He was the author of the two notable and lengthy poems "Don Juan" and '"Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," with 555 and 128 pages, respectively. Even though Friedrich Nietzsche was fascinated with the writer, Byron was a contentious figure due to his bisexuality, and sexual immorality after an amorous relationship with his half-sister, with whom he sired a child. His grandfather was Vice-Admiral John Byron, who circumnavigated the world in the 1700s. Thanks to the famous 20th-century actor, James Byron Dean, who starred in the movie "Rebel Without A Cause," the name became popularized in America. As did the multi-instrumentalist, Don Byron. Other notable figures named Byron include the current Tennessee governor, William Byron Lee, American artist Judy Byron, the priest of America's Society of Jesus, Rev. William J. Byron, and many others. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-bad-lord-byron-19491949.html

May 2: International Scurvy Awareness Day: -- You might be wondering why the world still needs to worry about scurvy. It is not a disease limited to those who went on great voyages of discovery and did not eat enough fruits and vegetables from their ship's limited provisions. The truth is that the disease is still prevalent in the world due to widespread malnutrition and starvation in many countries as well as the surprising number of individuals who undergo highly selective diets that exclude foods rich in Vitamin C. The day is also observed to pay respects to the people who endured it in the past. Their magnificent endurance shaped the world that we know today. Naturally, we cannot forget those who still endure such suffering even now. Scurvy was first noted during the Crusades which took place from the 11th to the 13th Century. European Christian powers sent forces to conquer opposing religions. During these long journeys, it was common for the men to slowly lose their strength and develop health issues that we now know as scurvy symptoms. It was only in the 1500s onwards that scurvy was recognized as an ultimately life-threatening disease after roughly 2,000,000 sailors died from the disease. The distressingly high death toll due to the disease sparked concern and further investigation from naval commanders and physicians alike. Commodore George Anson reported 1,855 out of 2,000 of his men perishing due to scurvy. After hearing Anson's report, a physician called James Lind was interested enough to investigate the disease that was wiping out the British naval forces. Lind went on to conduct trials to test treatment methods he'd heard other naval medical officers implement and ultimately proved that citrus fruits could prevent the disease and help sailors maintain good health during voyages. Despite his findings being true, Lind sadly passed away before they could become popularized. It was only at the end of the 1800s that prevention measures such as daily rations of vitamin C in the form of a juice became commonplace. After the staggering losses endured during many long voyages across land and sea, scurvy became a disease known to be fatal and highly preventable for many years. Now, though, many people view scurvy as a disease that's attached to the stereotypical pop-culture pirate. https://store.earthstation1.com/columbus-and-the-age-of-discovery-epic-7-hourlong-episode-tv-serie7.html

May 2: National Play Your Ukulele Day: -- A day celebrated to get more and more people interested in the instrument while also encouraging those playing it to strum their favorite tunes. The ukulele belongs to the guitar family of instruments. While the guitar is recognized by its six strings, the ukulele has only four. When it comes to its size, a ukulele is much smaller than a guitar. This makes the instrument easy to carry around and play for those who have smaller hands - for example, children. The first thing to know about a ukulele is that it has four notes - the notes that you can play on the ukulele are G, C, E, and A. The word 'ukulele' has Hawaiian roots. In the language, the word means 'jumping flea.' The name was probably picked because the musician's fingers look like fleas jumping on the strings when skillfully played! Even though the instrument's name has Hawaiian roots, it was brought to the island of Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. The ukulele was brought to mainstream music in the early 20th century, and it quickly became a popular instrument for jazz music. The ukulele, sometimes also known as the 'uke,' is also a part of country and pop music. You must have seen musical superstars like Jimmie Rodgers, Ernest V, Taylor Swift, Eddie Vedder, and George Harrison playing the ukulele during their performances. The skillful tunes of the ukulele make it the perfect accompaniment to most genres of music! And, of course, those who sing covers also prefer to sing along to the rhythm of the ukulele. Mike Lynch, also known as "Ukulele Mike," is the man behind National Play Your Ukulele Day. The day was first celebrated in 2011, and Lynch was a school teacher and an online ukulele instructor. He passed away in January 2018, but his memory lives on through National Play Your Ukulele Day. The day is celebrated by those who enjoy music and love playing the instrument. This is also a great day to learn how to play the ukulele! https://store.earthstation1.com/arthur-godfrey-dvd-set-2-discs-old-time-t2.html

May 2, 1519: #DOTD: #RIP: Leonardo da Vinci, Italian Renaissance polymath whose areas of interest included invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography (b. April 15, 1452) #dies at Clos Luce, France on at the age of 67, possibly of a stroke. King Francis I of France had become a close friend. Giorgio Vasari (Italian Renaissance Master, who worked as a painter, architect, engineer, writer, and historian, who is best known for his work The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, considered the ideological foundation of all art-historical writing, and the basis for biographies of several Renaissance artists, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo), describes Leonardo as lamenting on his deathbed, full of repentance, that "he had offended against God and men by failing to practice his art as he should have done." Vasari states that in his last days, Leonardo sent for a priest to make his confession and to receive the Holy Sacrament. Vasari also records that the King Francis I held Leonardo's head in his arms as he died, although this story may be legend rather than fact. In accordance with his will, sixty beggars carrying tapers followed Leonardo's casket. Count Francesco Melzi, da Vinci's friend and apprentice who painted the only certain contemporary depiction of Leonardo, was the principal heir and executor, receiving, as well as money, Leonardo's paintings, tools, library and personal effects. Leonardo's other long-time pupil and companion, Salai, and his servant Baptista de Vilanis, each received half of Leonardo's vineyards. His brothers received land, and his serving woman received a fur-lined cloak. On August 12, 1519, Leonardo's remains were interred in the Collegiate Church of Saint Florentin at the Chateau d'Amboise. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, more commonly Leonardo da Vinci or simply Leonardo or da Vinci, has been variously called the father of palaeontology, ichnology, and architecture, and is widely considered one of the greatest painters of all time. Credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter and tank, he epitomised the Renaissance humanist ideal. Many historians and scholars regard Leonardo as the prime exemplar of the "Universal Genius" or "Renaissance Man", an individual of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination", and he is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived. The scope and depth of his interests were without precedent in recorded history. While there is much speculation regarding his life and personality, his view of the world was logical rather than mysterious, and that the empirical methods he employed were unorthodox for his time. Born out of wedlock to a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, in Vinci in the region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Florentine painter Andrea del Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in the service of Ludovico il Moro in Milan. He later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice, and he spent his last years in France at the home awarded to him by Francis I of France. Leonardo was, and is, renowned primarily as a painter. Among his works, the Mona Lisa is the most famous and most parodied portrait, and The Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting of all time. Leonardo's drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on items as varied as the euro coin, textbooks, and T-shirts. A painting by Leonardo, Salvator Mundi, sold for a world record 450M USD at a Christie's auction in New York, November 15, 2017, the highest price ever paid for a work of art. Perhaps fifteen of his paintings have survived. Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawings, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on the nature of painting, compose a contribution to later generations of artists rivalled only by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo. Leonardo is revered for his technological ingenuity. He conceptualised flying machines, a type of armoured fighting vehicle, concentrated solar power, an adding machine, and the double hull. Relatively few of his designs were constructed or even feasible during his lifetime, as the modern scientific approaches to metallurgy and engineering were only in their infancy during the Renaissance. Some of his smaller inventions, however, such as an automated bobbin winder and a machine for testing the tensile strength of wire, entered the world of manufacturing unheralded. A number of Leonardo's most practical inventions are nowadays displayed as working models at the Museum of Vinci. He made substantial discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, geology, optics, and hydrodynamics, but he did not publish his findings and they had no direct influence on later science. https://store.earthstation1.com/leonardo-da-vinci-documentary-dvd-mp4-video-download-usb-flash-driv4.html

May 2, 1969: #DOTD: Franz von Papen, German nobleman, General Staff officer and politician, Chancellor of Germany (b. October 29, 1879) #dies in Obersasbach, West Germany at the age of 89. He is buried at Wallerfangen, Saarland in south west Germany on the border of France. Franz von Papen was born Franz Joseph Hermann Michael Maria von Papen into a wealthy and noble Catholic family in Werl, Westphalia, Prussia, German Empire. He served as Chancellor of Germany in 1932 and as Vice-Chancellor under Adolf Hitler in 1933-34. He belonged to the group of close advisers to President Paul von Hindenburg in the late Weimar Republic. It was largely Papen, believing that Hitler could be controlled once he was in the government, who persuaded Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as Chancellor in a cabinet not under Nazi Party domination. However, Papen and his allies were quickly marginalized by Hitler and he left the government after the Night of the Long Knives, during which the Nazis killed some of his confidantes. Hitler appointed him Ambassador to Austria until it was annexed by Germany, then Ambassador to Turkey. He was a defendant at the Nuremberg trials; the court acquitted him, stating that while he had committed a number of "political immoralities," these actions were not punishable under the "conspiracy to commit crimes against peace" written in Papen's indictment. The American and British judges voted to acquit while the Soviet and French judges voted to convict, and under the rules of Nuremberg, this resulted in an acquittal. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-fatal-attraction-of-adolf-hitler-dvd-2-part-tv-documentary-serie2.html

Today, May 2, 2026
May 2, 1945: #DOTD: Martin Bormann, prominent official in Nazi Germany as head of the Nazi Party Chancellery (b. June 17, 1900) #dies under circumstances that for more than five decades were considered mysterious until DNA testing proved the accounts of eyewitnesses to Bormann's last hours. According to the account of the death of Adolf Hitler by Hitler Youth leader Artur Axmann, Bormann left the Fuhrerbunker with him along with SS doctor Ludwig Stumpfegger and Hitler's pilot Hans Baur at around 11:00 pm on May 1, part of one of the groups attempting to break out of the Soviet encirclement. Bormann carried with him a copy of Hitler's last will and testament. The group left the Fuhrerbunker and travelled on foot via a U-Bahn subway tunnel to the Friedrichstrasse station, where they surfaced. Several members of the party attempted to cross the Spree River at the Weidendammer Bridge while crouching behind a Tiger tank. The tank was hit by an anti-tank round and Bormann and Stumpfegger were knocked to the ground. Bormann, Stumpfegger, and several others eventually crossed the river on their third attempt. Bormann, Stumpfegger, and Axmann walked along the railway tracks to Lehrter station, where Axmann decided to leave the others and go in the opposite direction. When he encountered a Red Army patrol, Axmann doubled back. He saw two bodies, which he later identified as Bormann and Stumpfegger, on a bridge near the railway switching yard. He did not have time to check thoroughly, so he did not know how they died. Since the Soviets never admitted to finding Bormann's body, his fate remained in doubt for many years. Over the following decades, several organisations, including the CIA and West German government, attempted to locate Bormann without success. In 1964, the West German government offered a reward of 100K DM for information leading to Bormann's capture. Sightings were reported all over the world, including Australia, Denmark, Italy, and South America. In his autobiography, Nazi intelligence officer Reinhard Gehlen claimed that Bormann had been a Soviet spy and had escaped to Moscow. Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal believed that Bormann was living in South America. The West German government declared that its hunt for Bormann was over in 1971. In 1963, a retired postal worker named Albert Krumnow told police that around May 8, 1945, the Soviets had ordered him and his colleagues to bury two bodies found near a railway bridge near Lehrter station (now Berlin Hauptbahnhof). One was dressed in a Wehrmacht uniform and the other was clad only in his underwear. On the second body, Krumnow's colleague Wagenpfohl found an SS doctor's paybook identifying him as Ludwig Stumpfegger. Wagenpfohl gave the paybook to his boss, postal chief Berndt, who turned it over to the Soviets. They in turn destroyed it. Wagenpfohl wrote to Stumpfegger's wife on August 14, 1945, informing her that her husband's body was "interred with the bodies of several other dead soldiers in the grounds of the Alpendorf in Berlin NW 40, Invalidenstrasse 63." Excavations on July 20-21, 1965 at the site specified by Axmann and Krumnow failed to locate the bodies. However, on December 7, 1972, construction workers uncovered human remains near Lehrter station in West Berlin, only 12 m (39 ft) from the spot where Krumnow claimed to have buried them. At the subsequent autopsies, fragments of glass were found in the jaws of both skeletons, suggesting that the men had committed suicide by biting cyanide capsules to avoid capture. Dental records reconstructed from memory in 1945 by Hugo Blaschke identified one skeleton as Bormann's, and damage to the collarbone was consistent with injuries that Bormann's sons reported he had sustained in a riding accident in 1939. Forensic examiners determined that the size of the skeleton and shape of the skull were identical to Bormann's. Likewise, the second skeleton was deemed to be Stumpfegger's, since it was of similar height to his last known proportions. Composite photographs, in which images of the skulls were overlaid on photographs of the men's faces, were completely congruent. Facial reconstruction was undertaken in early 1973 on both skulls to confirm the identities of the bodies. Soon afterward, the West German government declared Bormann dead. The family was not permitted to cremate the body, in case further forensic examination later proved necessary. The remains were conclusively identified as Bormann's in 1998 when German authorities ordered genetic testing on fragments of the skull. The testing was led by Wolfgang Eisenmenger, Professor of Forensic Science at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Tests using DNA from one of his relatives identified the skull as that of Bormann. Bormann's remains were cremated and his ashes were scattered over the Baltic Sea on August 16, 1999. Martin Bormann was born Martin Ludwig Bormann in Wegeleben, Prussia, German Empire. He gained immense power by using his position as Adolf Hitler's private secretary to control the flow of information and access to Hitler. He succeeded Hitler as Party Minister of the National Socialist German Workers' Party after Hitler's suicide on 30 April 1945. Bormann joined a paramilitary Freikorps organisation in 1922 while working as manager of a large estate. He served nearly a year in prison as an accomplice to his friend Rudolf Hoess (later commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp) in the murder of Walther Kadow, a German school teacher who was a member of the rightwing German Volkisch Freedom Party, and was suspected of having betrayed German nationalist Albert Leo Schlageter to the French occupation authorities in the Ruhr. Bormann joined the Nazi Party in 1927 and the Schutzstaffel (SS) in 1937. He initially worked in the party's insurance service, and transferred in July 1933 to the office of Deputy Fuehrer Rudolf Hess, where he served as Chief Of Staff. Bormann used his position to create an extensive bureaucracy and involve himself as much as possible in the decision making. He gained acceptance into Hitler's inner circle, and accompanied him everywhere, providing briefings and summaries of events and requests. He began acting as Hitler's personal secretary on 12 August 1935. Bormann assumed Hess' former duties, with the title of Head of the Parteikanzlei (Party Chancellery), after Hess' solo flight to Britain on 10 May 1941 to seek peace negotiations with the British government. He had final approval over civil service appointments, reviewed and approved legislation, and by 1943 had de facto control over all domestic matters. Bormann was one of the leading proponents of the ongoing persecution of the Christian churches and favoured harsh treatment of Jews and Slavs in the areas conquered by Germany during World War II. Bormann returned with Hitler to the Fuehrerbunker in Berlin on January 16, 1945 as the Red Army approached the city. After Hitler committed suicide, Bormann and others attempted to flee Berlin on May 2 to avoid capture by the Soviets. What happened next remains controversial. Bormann may either have committed suicide or been killed by advancing Red Army forces on or near an unnamed bridge near Lehrter station, the main train station in Berlin. The body was reported to have been buried nearby on 8 May 1945, according to a 1963 account by a retired postal worker named Albert Krumnow, but the body was not found until 1972. It was confirmed as Bormann's body in 1972 based on the accounts of those involved with the burial, relying on their memory of events two decades previous, and the identification was reaffirmed in 1998 by DNA tests, the science of which is not in doubt, but the results may not have been honestly reported, as was the case of the DNA tests of the supposed remains of Adolf Hitler. According to CBS journalist Paul Manning, during his research for his book Martin Bormann: Nazi in Exile, he found that Martin Bormann had in 1967 cashed a check at Manufacturers Hanover and Chase Manhattan Bank that was cleared through Deutsche Bank in Buenos Aires in Argentina, and had been cashed over his own signature. Whatever may be true, Bormann was tried in absentia by the International Military Tribunal in the Nuremberg trials of 1945 and 1946. He was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging. https://store.earthstation1.com/hitler39s-henchmen-the-leaders-of-nazi-germany-dvd-mp4-394.html

Initiated and organized by Rev. James Bevel, the purpose of the march was to walk downtown to talk to Birmingham's mayor Albert Boutwell about segregation in their city. Many children left their schools and were arrested, set free, and then arrested again the next day. The marches were stopped by the head of police, Bull Connor, who brought fire hoses to ward off the children and set police dogs after the children. This event compelled President John F. Kennedy to publicly support federal civil rights legislation and eventually led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act Of 1964. May 2, 1986: Nuclear And Radioactive Disasters: Nuclear Disasters In The Soviet Union: Nuclear Disasters In The Ukraine: Nuclear Disasters In Belarus: The Chernobyl Disaster: -- A full six days after the Chernobyl Disaster, the City of Chernobyl is at last evacuated. On April 29, 1986, American and European spy satellites capture the ruins of the 4th Reactor at the Chernobyl Power Plant, making it impossible for the USSR to continue to deny that the radiation detected at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden originated from the damaged Chernobyl reactor. The Chernobyl Disaster, also referred to as the Chernobyl Accident, was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred between April 25-26, 1986 in the No. 4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the now-abandoned town of Pripyat, in northern Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union, approximately 104 km (65 mi) north of Kiev. The event occurred during a late-night safety test which simulated a station blackout power failure, in the course of which safety systems were intentionally turned off. A combination of inherent reactor design flaws and the reactor operators arranging the core in a manner contrary to the checklist for the test, eventually resulted in uncontrolled reaction conditions. Water flashed into steam, generating a destructive steam explosion and a subsequent open-air graphite fire. This fire produced considerable updrafts for about nine days. These lofted plumes of fission products into the atmosphere. The estimated radioactive inventory that was released during this very hot fire phase approximately equaled in magnitude the airborne fission products released in the initial destructive explosion. This radioactive material precipitated onto parts of the western USSR and Europe. During the accident, steam-blast effects caused two deaths within the facility; one immediately after the explosion, and the other, compounded by a lethal dose of radiation. Over the coming days and weeks, 134 servicemen were hospitalized with acute radiation symptoms, of which 28 firemen and employees died in the days-to-months afterward from the effects of acute radiation syndrome (ARS). In addition, approximately fourteen radiation induced cancer deaths among this group of 134 hospitalized survivors were to follow within the next ten years. Among the wider population, an excess of 15 childhood thyroid cancer deaths were documented as of 2011. It will take further time and investigation to definitively determine the elevated relative risk of cancer among the surviving employees, those that were initially hospitalized with ARS and the population at large. The Chernobyl Accident is considered the most disastrous nuclear power plant accident in history, both in terms of cost and casualties. It is one of only two nuclear energy accidents classified as a level 7 event (the maximum classification) on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011. The struggle to safeguard against scenarios which were perceived as having the potential for greater catastrophe, together with later decontamination efforts of the surroundings, ultimately involved over 500,000 workers and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles. The remains of the No. 4 reactor building were enclosed in a large cover which was named The Object Shelter, often known as The Sarcophagus. The purpose of the structure was to reduce the spread of the remaining radioactive dust and debris from the wreckage and the protection of the wreckage from further weathering. The sarcophagus was finished in December 1986 at a time when what was left of the reactor was entering the cold shut-down phase. The enclosure was not intended as a radiation shield, but was built quickly as occupational safety for the crews of the other undamaged reactors at the power station, with No.3 continuing to produce electricity up into 2000. The accident motivated safety upgrades on all remaining Soviet-designed reactors in the RBMK (Chernobyl No. 4) family, of which eleven continued to power electric grids as of 2013. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-chernobyl-nuclear-disaster-the-documentaries-dvd-2-disc2.html

May 2, 1957: #DOTD: Joseph McCarthy, American captain, lawyer, judge, and politician who served as U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 until his death, becoming in 1950 the most visible public face of a period in the United States in which Cold War tensions fueled fears of widespread Communist subversion (b. November 14, 1908) #dies at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland at the age of 48. His death certificate listed the cause of death as "Hepatitis, acute, cause unknown". Doctors had not previously reported him to be in critical condition. Some biographers say this was caused or exacerbated by alcoholism. He is buried at Saint Mary's Cemetery in Appleton, Wisconsin. Joseph McCarthy was born Joseph Raymond McCarthy in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. McCarthy is known for alleging that numerous Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers had infiltrated the United States federal government, universities, film industry, and elsewhere. Ultimately, the smear tactics he used led him to be censured by the U.S. Senate. The term "McCarthyism", coined in 1950 in reference to McCarthy' practices, was soon applied to similar anti-communist activities. Today, the term is used in reference to what are considered demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations, as well as public attacks on the character or patriotism of political opponents. McCarthy was commissioned into the Marine Corps in 1942, where he served as an intelligence briefing officer for a dive bomber squadron. Following the end of World War II, he attained the rank of major. He volunteered to fly twelve combat missions as a gunner-observer, acquiring the nickname "Tail-Gunner Joe". Some of his claims of heroism were later shown to be exaggerated or falsified, leading many of his critics to use "Tail-Gunner Joe" as a term of mockery. McCarthy successfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 1946, defeating Robert M. La Follette Jr. After three largely undistinguished years in the Senate, McCarthy rose suddenly to national fame in February 1950 when he asserted in a speech that he had a list of "members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring" who were employed in the State Department. In succeeding years after his 1950 speech, McCarthy made additional accusations of Communist infiltration into the State Department, the administration of President Harry S. Truman, the Voice Of America, and the U.S. Army. He also used various charges of communism, communist sympathies, disloyalty, or sex crimes to attack a number of politicians and other individuals inside and outside of government. This included a concurrent "Lavender Scare" against suspected homosexuals (as homosexuality was prohibited by law at the time, it was also perceived to increase a person' risk for blackmail). With the highly publicized Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954, and following the suicide of Wyoming Senator and McCarthy enemy Lester C. Hunt that same year, McCarthy' support and popularity faded. On December 2, 1954, the Senate voted to censure Senator McCarthy by a vote of 67-22, making him one of the few senators ever to be disciplined in this fashion. https://store.earthstation1.com/joseph-mccarthy-dvd-tv-documentaries.html

May 2, 1972: #DOTD: J. Edgar Hoover, American detective, law enforcement official and first Director of the F.B.I., the Federal Bureau of Investigation (b. January 1, 1895) #dies of a heart attack in his Washington, D.C. home, aged 77. He is buried in The Congressional Cemetery, officially Washington Parish Burial Ground, located at 1801 E Street, SE, in Washington, DC. Operational command of the Bureau was passed onto Associate Director Clyde Tolson. The following day, Nixon appointed L. Patrick Gray - a Justice Department official with no FBI experience - as Acting Director of the FBI, with W. Mark Felt becoming associate director, the man who in 2005 revealed himself to Vanity Fair magazine to have been the notorious anonymous source known as "Deep Throat", who provided The Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein with critical information about the Watergate scandal, which ultimately led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974. Hoover's body lay in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, where Chief Justice Warren Burger eulogized him. Up to that time, Hoover was the only civil servant to have lain in state, according to The New York Daily News. At the time, The New York Times observed that this was "an honor accorded to only 21 persons before, of whom eight were Presidents or former Presidents." J. Edgar Hoover was born John Edgar Hoover on New Year's Day 1895 in Washington, D.C.. J. Edgar Hoover was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained director until his death in 1972 at the age of 77. Hoover has been credited with building the FBI into a larger crime-fighting agency than it was at its inception and with instituting a number of modernizations to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories. Later in life and after his death, Hoover became a controversial figure as evidence of his secretive abuses of power began to surface. He was found to have exceeded the jurisdiction of the FBI, and to have used the FBI to harass political dissenters and activists, to amass secret files on political leaders, and to collect evidence using illegal methods. Hoover consequently amassed a great deal of power and was in a position to intimidate and threaten sitting presidents. One of his biographers, Kenneth Ackerman, writes that the allegation that Hoover's secret files kept presidents from firing him is a myth. However, Richard Nixon was recorded in 1971 stating that one of the reasons he did not fire Hoover was that he was afraid of reprisals against him from Hoover. President Harry S. Truman said that Hoover transformed the FBI into his private secret police force: "... we want no Gestapo or secret police. The FBI is tending in that direction. They are dabbling in sex-life scandals and plain blackmail. J. Edgar Hoover would give his right eye to take over, and all congressmen and senators are afraid of him.". https://store.earthstation1.com/j-edgar-hoover-biography-dvd-mp4-video-download-usb-flash-driv4.html

November 30, 1918) #dies from natural causes in Solvang, California at the age of 95. He is buried at Town Hill Cemetery in New Hartford, Connecticut. He was born in New York City to Jewish immigrants Efrem Zimbalist Sr. (1889-1985), a famous Russian-born violinist, and Alma Gluck (1884-1938), an equally famous Romanian-born operatic soprano. Efrem Zimbalist Jr. is also known as recurring character "Dandy Jim Buckley" in the series Maverick and as the voice behind the character Alfred Pennyworth in Batman: The Animated Series and associated spin-offs. He also voiced Doctor Octopus in the 1990s Spider-Man animated series and the 2000 PC, Dreamcast and PlayStation Spider-Man action-adventure video game, and Justin Hammer from the second season of the 1994 Iron Man animated series. Zimbalist was drafted in 1941. Inducted into the United States Army, he completed his initial training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Selected for officer candidate school, after graduation in 1943 he received his commission as a second lieutenant of Infantry. Zimbalist was assigned as a platoon leader in Company L, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division and participated in combat in Europe following the Normandy landings. He was discharged at the end of the war, and his awards and decorations included the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge, in addition to the Purple Heart he received for a shrapnel wound to his leg during the battle of Huertgen Forest. Zimbalist was most widely known for his starring role as Inspector Lewis Erskine in the Quinn Martin television production The F.B.I., which premiered on September 19, 1965 and aired its final episode on September 8, 1974. Zimbalist was generous in his praise of producer Martin and of his own experience starring in the show. Those who worked with him were equally admiring of the star's professionalism and likable personality. Zimbalist maintained a strong personal relationship with F.B.I. director J. Edgar Hoover, who requested that the show be technically accurate and portray his agents in the best possible light, and he insisted actors playing F.B.I. employees undergo a background check. Zimbalist subsequently spent a week in contact with Hoover in Washington, D.C. and at the F.B.I. Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The men remained mutual admirers for the rest of Hoover's life. Hoover held up Zimbalist as a model for F.B.I. employees' personal appearance. The Society of Former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation honored the character of Lewis Erskine in 1985 with a set of retired credentials, and on June 8, 2009 FBI Director Robert Mueller presented Zimbalist with a plaque honoring him for his work on the series. https://store.earthstation1.com/to-paint-the-stars-the-life-amp-mind-of-vincent-van-gogh-dvd.html

May 2, 1907: #BOTD: #HBD! Pinky Lee, American comedian and television host (d. May 2, 1993) is #born Pincus Leff in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Pinky Lee was an American burlesque comic and host of the children's television program The Pinky Lee Show in the early 1950s. Lee worked as a comic of the "baggy pants" variety on stage, becoming an expert at the slapstick, comic dancing and rapid-fire jokes of the burlesque style. During the 1940s, he was heard on Drene Time and other radio programs. Easily recognized by his trademark lisp and high-energy antics, his signature costume was a loud plaid suit with baggy checkered pants and an undersized hat. During his routines, whenever anybody irritated him (which happened frequently) he would unleash his catchphrase: "Oooooh! You make me so mad!". In 1950, he had his own 30-minute primetime variety television series on NBC, The Pinky Lee Show, featuring vaudevillians and burlesque comics. In 1951-52 he starred with Vivian Blaine in a 15-minute sitcom, Those Two. He returned in 1954 with The Pinky Lee Show, sponsored by Tootsie Roll. An Emmy-nominated afternoon children's program that spawned later imitators such as Pee-Wee's Playhouse, it was followed each day by the popular Howdy Doody Show. Lee opened each show with his trademark theme song, "Yoo Hoo, It's Me!". In 1955, Lee collapsed on camera due to an infection. His normal antics were so energetic that apparently the cameraman and the show's director assumed the fall an ad lib part of his performance. The "Peanut Gallery", an audience usually composed almost entirely of pre-adolescent children who were coached by a staff member, continued their enthusiastic cheering and applause from the on-stage bleachers. After as much as ten seconds of writhing by the stricken Lee, the camera abruptly panned to the still-cheering audience. The following afternoons Pinky Lee was not present. This effectively ended his leading role on the show, which continued without him until 1956. Rumors that he had died of a heart attack, prompted by the incident, persisted for decades. Occasionally, newspaper items mentioned the "late" Lee-even though he was performing at a dinner theater in the same city as one of the reporting newspapers. The incident also spawned rumors that Lee had been institutionalized after going insane on live television. In 1957, Lee hosted The Gumby Show, the original appearance of that claymation character. In 1964, Lee attempted a return to kids' TV, hosting a local children's comedy program on KABC-TV in Los Angeles. This series was nationally syndicated for the 1964-65 TV seasons, but the program fell prey to creative interference from the show's producers and station management. Lee fought the interference, but his efforts were for naught. The Pinky Lee Kids TV Show went off the air after one season. In later years, Lee worked as a teacher and appeared in regional musical theater productions. He died in 1993 in Mission Viejo, California. He is buried at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. https://store.earthstation1.com/pinky-lee-dvd-classic-tv-kid-shows.html

His later work was predominantly in television and radio. Born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, into a family with no theatrical connections, Hordern was educated at Windlesham House School where he became interested in drama. He went on to Brighton College where his interest in the theatre developed. After leaving the college he joined an amateur dramatics company, and came to the notice of several influential Shakespearean directors who cast him in minor roles in Othello and Macbeth. During the Second World War he served on HMS Illustrious where he reached the rank of lieutenant commander. Upon his demobilisation he resumed his acting career and made his television debut, becoming a reliable bit-part actor in many films, particularly in the war film genre. Hordern came to prominence in the early 1950s when he took part in a theatrical competition at the Arts Theatre in London. There, he impressed Glen Byam Shaw who secured the actor a season-long contract at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre where he played major parts, including Caliban in The Tempest, Jaques in As You Like It, and Sir Politick Would-Be in Ben Jonson's comedy Volpone. The following season Hordern joined Michael Benthall's company at the Old Vic where, among other parts, he played Polonius in Hamlet, and the title role in King John. In 1957 he won a best actor award at that year's British Academy Television Awards for his role as the barrister in John Mortimer's courtroom drama The Dock Brief. Other movies Hordern appeared in include The Bed Sitting Room (1969) and Sink The Bismarck! (1960). In the late 1960s Hordern met the British theatre director Jonathan Miller, who cast him in Whistle and I'll Come to You, which was recorded for television and received wide praise. Hordern's next major play was Jumpers which appeared at the Royal National Theatre at the start of 1972. His performance was praised by critics and he reprised the role four years later. His television commitments increased towards the end of his life. His credits include Paradise Postponed, the BAFTA award-winning Memento Mori, and the BBC adaptation of Middlemarch. He was appointed a CBE in 1972 and was knighted eleven years later. May 2, 1999: #DOTD: #RIP: Oliver Reed, English actor known for his well-to-do, macho image and "hellraiser" lifestyle (b. February 13, 1938) #dies from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of May 2, 1999, aged 61. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whisky, and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from HMS Cumberland at a local pub. His bar bill totalled a little over 270 LM (almost 450 Pounds Sterling; about 590 USD). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying while en route to hospital in an ambulance. A funeral for Reed was held in Churchtown, County Cork, in Ireland where he had resided during the last years of his life. His body is interred in Churchtown's Bruhenny Graveyard. The epitaph on his gravestone reads, "He made the air move." Oliver Reed was born Robert Oliver Reed at 9 Durrington Park Road, Wimbledon, southwest London, England. After making his first significant screen appearances in Hammer Horror films in the early 1960s, his notable films include The Trap (1966), playing Bill Sikes in the 1968 Best Picture Oscar winner Oliver! (a film directed by his uncle Carol Reed), Women in Love (1969), Hannibal Brooks (1969), The Devils (1971), Revolver (1973), portraying Athos in The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974); the lover and stepfather in Tommy (1975), The Brood (1979), Lion of the Desert (1981), Castaway (1986), The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988), Funny Bones (1995) and Gladiator (2000). For playing Antonius Proximo, the old, gruff gladiator trainer in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, in what was his final film, Reed was posthumously nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2000. At the peak of his career, in 1971, British exhibitors voted Reed fifth most popular star at the box office. The British Film Institute (BFI) stated that "partnerships with Michael Winner and Ken Russell in the mid-60s saw Reed become an emblematic Brit-flick icon", but from the mid-1970s his alcoholism began affecting his career, with the BFI adding "Reed had assumed Robert Newton's mantle as Britain's thirstiest thespian". https://store.earthstation1.com/art-documentaries-and-films-dvd-mp4-video-download-usb-flash-driv4.html

May 2, 1982: The British Empire: The Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas): The Falkland Islands Sovereignty Dispute: The Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra De Las Malvinas): Naval Warfare Of The Falklands War: The Sinking Of The ARA General Belgrano: -- The British nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror sinks the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano, becoming the only nuclear-powered submarine to have engaged an enemy ship with torpedoes. HMS Conqueror was a British Churchill-class nuclear-powered fleet submarine which served in the Royal Navy from 1971 to 1990. She was the third submarine of her class, following the earlier Churchill and Courageous, that were all designed to face the Soviet threat at sea. She was built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead. Commanded by Commander Chris Wreford-Brown, Conqueror set sail from Faslane Naval Base on the Gareloch in Scotland on April 3, 1982, one day after the Argentine invasion. Conqueror arrived in the exclusion zone around the Falkland Islands 21 days later and was ordered to scan the area for Argentine shipping, particularly the aircraft carrier Veinticinco de Mayo ("25th of May"). On April 30, she spotted the Argentine light cruiser General Belgrano sailing southwest of the Falklands, just outside the exclusion zone imposed by the British on all shipping. With Veinticinco de Mayo approaching the islands from the north, the commander of the British Taskforce, Admiral 'Sandy' Woodward, feared a pincer attack, with General Belgrano attacking from the south and Veinticinco de Mayo from the north and requested permission from the British government to sink General Belgrano. After some debate, permission to engage General Belgrano was sent to the submarine from the Royal Navy's fleet command centre in Northwood in the United Kingdom. In the intervening period, General Belgrano had retired from its attack position and turned west, since Veinticinco de Mayo was not yet ready to engage the British fleet. This would cause some controversy, although General Belgrano's captain and the Argentine government acknowledged that the attack was a legitimate act of war. On May 2, Conqueror became the first nuclear-powered submarine to fire in anger, launching three Mark 8 torpedoes at General Belgrano, two of which struck the ship and exploded. Twenty minutes later, the ship was sinking rapidly and was abandoned by her crew. General Belgrano was unable to issue a Mayday signal because of electrical failure; this and poor visibility meant the two escorting destroyers ARA Piedra Buena and ARA Bouchard (both also ex-United States Navy vessels) were unaware of the sinking until some hours later. A total of 323 men were killed. Adding to the confusion, the crew of Bouchard felt an impact that was possibly the third torpedo striking at the end of its run (an examination of the ship later showed an impact mark consistent with a torpedo). The two ships continued on their course westward and began dropping depth charges. By the time the ships realised that something had happened to General Belgrano, it was already dark and the weather had worsened, scattering the life rafts. Conqueror's war did not end there. The crew of the submarine had to face Argentine Air Force attempts to locate her in the days after the attack, which had shocked the Argentine people and ruling dictatorship. Conqueror did not fire again in anger throughout the war, but helped the task force by using sophisticated monitoring equipment to track Argentine aircraft departing from the mainland. After the war, Conqueror returned to Faslane, flying a Jolly Roger adorned with torpedoes, a customary act of Royal Navy submarines after a kill. When asked about the incident later, Commander Wreford-Brown responded, "The Royal Navy spent thirteen years preparing me for such an occasion. It would have been regarded as extremely dreary if I had fouled it up". https://store.earthstation1.com/the-falklands-war-the-untold-story-dvd-2-part-tv-serie2.html

She served in Parliament as a member of the Conservative Party for Plymouth Sutton until 1945, when she was persuaded to step down. A widely circulated story, probably apocryphal (the joke dates from 1899) but printed in the New York Times in 1949, states "Winston Spencer Churchill has been the subject of many a piquant anecdote based on his personality, robust wit and felicity of phrase. The story is being told of his encounter with a politically minded lady who, after failing to shake him in an argument, broke off with the petulant remark, "Oh, if you were my husband, I'd put poison in your tea." "Madame," Winston responded, "if I were, I'd drink it with pleasure." May 2, 2015: #DOTD: #RIP: Maya Plisetskaya, Russian-Lithuanian ballet dancer, choreographer, ballet director, actress and beauty who in post-Soviet times, she held both Lithuanian and Spanish citizenship (b. November 20, 1925) #dies in Munich, Germany of a heart attack.According to her last will and testament, she was to be cremated, and after the death of her widower, Soviet and Russian composer and pianist Rodion Shchedrin (b. December 16, 1932), who is also to be cremated, their ashes are to be combined and spread over Russia. Maya Plisetskaya was born Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. She danced during the Soviet era at the Bolshoi Theatre under the directorships of Leonid Lavrovsky, then of Yury Grigorovich; later she moved into direct confrontation with him. In 1960, when famed Russian ballerina Galina Ulanova retired, Plisetskaya became prima ballerina assoluta of the company. Her early years were marked by political repression and loss. Her father, Mikhail Plisetski, a Soviet official, was arrested in 1937 and executed in 1938, during the Great Purge. Her mother, actress Rachel Messerer, was arrested in 1938 and imprisoned for a few years, then held in a concentration camp together with her infant son, Azari . The older children were faced with the threat of being put in an orphanage but were cared for by maternal relatives. Maya was adopted by their aunt Sulamith Messerer, and Alexander was taken into the family of their uncle Asaf Messerer; both Alexander and Azary eventually became solo dancers of the Bolshoi. Plisetskaya studied ballet at The Bolshoi Ballet School from age nine, and she first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre when she was eleven. She studied ballet under the direction of Elizaveta Gerdt and also her aunt, Sulamith Messerer. Graduating in 1943 at the age of eighteen, she joined the Bolshoi Ballet company, quickly rising to become their leading soloist. In 1959, during the Thaw Time, she started to tour outside the country with the Bolshoi, then on her own. Her fame as a national ballerina was used to project the Soviet Union's achievements during the Cold War. Premier Nikita Khrushchev considered her to be "not only the best ballerina in the Soviet Union, but the best in the world". As an artist, Plisetskaya had an inexhaustible interest in new roles and dance styles, and she liked to experiment on stage. As a member of the Bolshoi until 1990, she had international exposure and her skills as a dancer changed the world of ballet. She set a higher standard for ballerinas, both in terms of technical brilliance and dramatic presence. As a soloist, Plisetskaya created a number of leading roles, including Juliet in Lavrovsky's Romeo and Juliet; Phrygia in Yakobson's Spartacus (1958); in Grigorovich's ballets : Mistress of the Copper Mountain in The Stone Flower (1959); Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty (1963); Mahmene Banu in The Legend of Love (1965); Alberto Alonso's Carmen Suite (1967), choreographed especially for her; and Maurice Bejart's Isadora (1976). Among her most acclaimed roles were Kitri in Don Quixote, Odette-Odile in Swan Lake, and The Dying Swan, first danced as a pre-graduate student under the guidance of Sulamith Messerer. A fellow dancer said that her dramatic portrayal of Carmen, reportedly her favorite role, "helped confirm her as a legend, and the ballet soon took its place as a landmark in the Bolshoi repertoire". Her husband, composer Rodion Shchedrin, wrote the scores to a number of her ballets. Having become "an international superstar" and a continuous "box office hit throughout the world", Plisetskaya was treated by the Soviet Union as a favored cultural emissary. Although she toured extensively during the same years that other prominent dancers defected, including Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, Plisetskaya always refused to defect. In 1991, she published her autobiography, I, Maya Plisetskaya. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-bolshoi-ballet-complete-2-part-tv-documentary-series-dv2.html
